Complete guide to orchid care

Guía completa para el cuidado de las orquídeas

Why are orchids so special?

Orchids are one of the most elegant and long-lasting flowers you can have at home. With proper care, they can bloom for weeks or even years. Here's everything you need to know to keep them beautiful.

Light: the secret to blooming

Orchids need bright, indirect light. Place them near an east or west-facing window, avoiding direct sunlight which can burn their leaves. If the leaves turn yellow, it's a sign of too much light; if they become dark green, they need more light.

Watering: less is more

One of the most common mistakes is overwatering. Water your orchid only when the substrate is almost dry, usually every 7 to 10 days. The best technique is to submerge the pot in water for 15 minutes and then let it drain completely. Never leave standing water in the saucer.

Humidity and temperature

Orchids thrive with humidity between 50% and 70%. You can place a saucer with pebbles and water under the pot to increase local humidity. The ideal temperature is between 18°C and 27°C during the day, with a slight drop at night which stimulates flowering.

Substrate and pot

Orchids do not grow in common soil. They need a special substrate made of pine bark, charcoal, and perlite that allows good root aeration. Transparent pots are ideal because they allow you to monitor the condition of the roots and the moisture of the substrate.

Fertilization

During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize every two weeks with a specific orchid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended dose. In autumn and winter, reduce fertilization to once a month.

When and how to repot?

Repot your orchid every 2 or 3 years, or when the roots start to grow out of the pot's drainage holes. The best time is right after flowering. Take the opportunity to remove dry or rotten roots and completely refresh the substrate.

How to get it to bloom again

After flowering, cut the flower stalk just above a node. Exposing the plant to a temperature difference of 5°C to 10°C between day and night for 4 to 6 weeks stimulates the appearance of new flower spikes. Patience and consistency are key!

Warning signs

  • Gray or wrinkled roots: lack of water.
  • Black or soft roots: overwatering or rot.
  • Yellow leaves: too much light or water.
  • Spots on leaves: possible fungal or bacterial infection.
